Maviş: Teachers Are Ready, Education Ministry Is Not

In a statement, Maviş said September 7 was the date set in the academic calendar for teachers to return to work and begin preparations for the new school year. He said teachers had started preparing their classrooms, programmes and educational activities as of yesterday.

However, Maviş said images obtained by the union showed that construction and renovation work was still continuing at some schools. He said teachers were being forced to prepare for the new term in schools that remained construction sites, while the Education Ministry had once again failed to fulfil its responsibilities.

Maviş criticised the decision to leave work that had been known about for months until the final week before schools reopened.

“This approach has once again shown how education under Nazım Çavuşoğlu’s ministry has been trapped in a cycle of poor planning, neglect and last-minute panic,” Maviş said.

He said some teachers had not been able to enter safe schools on September 7 and stressed that all children and teachers must be able to enter safe, clean and education-ready schools on September 14.

Maviş called on the Education Ministry to complete all outstanding work without further delay and take the necessary safety measures.

“No child or teacher should be exposed to construction-related risks,” he said, adding that ensuring schools are safe and ready for the new academic year was the ministry’s responsibility.
