Taçoy: I Have No Expectations of Becoming Minister

Speaking on Kıbrıs Postası TV’s “Sabah Postası” programme hosted by Gökhan Altıner, Taçoy commented on current political developments.

Regarding who would replace Arıklı, Taçoy said he had never sought a ministerial position. He noted that only around three months remained until the election and described the period ahead as challenging.

Taçoy said whoever takes over the ministry would have to assume responsibility for the difficult process and conduct it transparently. He also said Prime Minister Ünal Üstel was trying to take responsibility for the process despite his heavy workload.

Commenting on the investigation following Arıklı’s dismissal, Taçoy said Arıklı should have resigned if he were still in office, in order to ensure the investigation could proceed properly.

“If I were in his position, I would have resigned long ago,” Taçoy said, adding that it would be appropriate for an office-holder to step aside during an investigation to ensure the process was conducted properly.

Taçoy reiterated that he had no expectations of taking over the ministry and said he had good relations with Prime Minister Ünal Üstel.

“UBP Could Emerge as the Largest Party”

Turning to the upcoming election, Taçoy said UBP had begun to recover through its current structure and recent steps, adding that the party could emerge from the election as the largest party.

He said internal disputes and criticism within UBP over the past three to four years had prevented the opposition from effectively challenging the government, allowing the opposition party to gain support.

Taçoy said criticism within UBP should also be viewed in this context and described UBP as an “indispensable” party for the country.

“What Difference Would Ending the Preference Vote Make?”

Taçoy also commented on the preference voting system, saying he had no objection to its abolition.

“What difference would it make if it were abolished, or if it stayed?” he said.

He argued that the preference vote did not carry much significance for the major parties and continued his assessment along those lines.
