Holguin Cancels New York and Cyprus Visits Due to Health Issues
Maria Angela Holguin, the UN Secretary-General’s Personal Representative for Cyprus, has cancelled planned visits to New York and Cyprus this week due to health issues. She is expected to brief UN Secretary-General António Guterres on her work by phone instead.
According to Cyprus Mail, citing UN spokesperson Stephane Dujarric’s statement yesterday, Holguin had planned to travel to New York to meet Guterres before coming to Cyprus. However, she will instead brief the UN chief by telephone on her work.
Under the previously announced schedule, Holguin was due to arrive in Cyprus tomorrow, meet President Tufan Erhürman and Greek Cypriot leader Nikos Christodoulides, and remain on the island until the next leaders’ meeting on September 16.
Meanwhile, Christodoulides said on Saturday that he hoped a document outlining the current areas of convergence on the Cyprus issue would be prepared before Holguin’s return to the island.
He argued that the document could provide “a very good way forward for the resumption of negotiations” aimed at holding an expanded conference.
