Parliament to Hold Extraordinary Session on Thursday Over Filo Jet Disaster

During the third extraordinary session, lawmakers will also consider a bill approving an additional protocol amending the cooperation agreement between the TRNC and Turkey on the development of fibre-optic infrastructure.

The General Assembly will also take up the Election and Referendum (Amendment) Bill, the Public Servants (Amendment No. 3) Bill and the Regulation of Monthly Salaries, Wages and Other Allowances of Public Employees (Amendment No. 3) Bill, all of which were returned to committee for further consideration.

Two Motions on Filo Jet Disaster

The General Assembly will hold preliminary discussions on two separate motions submitted by the Republican Turkish Party (CTP) and jointly by the National Unity Party (UBP) and Democratic Party (DP) concerning the passenger vessel disaster off Kyrenia Port on August 30.

A motion submitted by several CTP MPs calls for an investigation into the causes of the disaster, licensing and inspection procedures, as well as possible negligence and administrative responsibility.

The other motion, submitted jointly by UBP Chairman and Prime Minister Ünal Üstel and DP Chairman and Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Tourism, Culture, Youth and Environment Fikri Ataoğlu, calls for a parliamentary investigation into the causes of the Filo Jet disaster and possible negligence, licensing and inspection procedures.
