Erhürman Criticises Greek Cypriot Administration Over ‘Trust’

Erhürman assessed the Cyprus issue, regional developments and confidence-building measures.

He said agreements signed with various countries, particularly Israel and Greece, disregarded Turkish Cypriots and represented initiatives that risked lasting peace and stability on the island and in the region.

Erhürman also said that no new confidence-building measures had been implemented, while issues including Barcelona, festivals, property and one-sided and biased European Parliament decisions resulting from initiatives by Greek Cypriot MPs had further damaged the existing atmosphere of trust.

“On the one hand, initiatives that disregard Turkish Cypriots and risk lasting peace and stability on the island and in the region are being pursued through agreements with various countries, particularly Israel and Greece. On the other hand, rather than implementing new confidence-building measures, trust is being eroded even further through issues such as Barcelona, festivals, property and one-sided, biased European Parliament decisions resulting from initiatives by Greek Cypriot MPs. I think it is clear to everyone—not only Turkish Cypriots and Greek Cypriots, but also the international community—that ‘writing history together’ is far from easy under these circumstances,” Erhürman said.

Erhürman also referred to international developments, saying: “The good news of the day is the decisions taken by a total of 12 countries, particularly the UK, France and Canada, regarding Israel...”
