Greek Cypriot Foreign Ministry Welcomes US Arms Embargo Waiver Extension
The Greek Cypriot Foreign Ministry has welcomed the United States’ decision to extend the lifting of defence restrictions on Cyprus for another fiscal year, describing it as an important step towards deepening strategic and defence cooperation between the two countries.
In a statement, the ministry said the decision allows the export, re-export and transfer of arms, defence equipment and services from the US to Cyprus during the period covered by the extension.
The decision was described as recognition of the “continued expansion of the strategic partnership and cooperation” between the two countries, while reflecting their “shared priorities” in supporting stability in the Eastern Mediterranean and Levant regions.
The ministry said progress had been made in defence cooperation in recent years, particularly through the “Defence and Security Cooperation Dialogue” established in 2021 and the “Bilateral Defence Cooperation Roadmap” signed in 2024.
Cyprus has also gained access to US defence programmes, including Foreign Military Sales (FMS) and Excess Defense Articles (EDA), the statement said.
The Greek Cypriot Foreign Ministry said the extension of the lifting of the restrictions “contributes to further deepening bilateral cooperation” and thanked bipartisan initiatives in Congress aimed at securing a long-term and permanent waiver.
