Christodoulides: Intensive Preparations Underway for Cyprus Talks Breakthrough
Greek Cypriot leader Nikos Christodoulides said intensive preparations were continuing in the hope of achieving concrete results on the Cyprus issue during the “high-level week” of the UN General Assembly, which begins in New York next Monday.
“What I can say is that preparations are continuing and an intensive process is underway. A meeting of the negotiators is being held today. This could help produce results during General Assembly week that would make it possible to achieve the desired goal,” Christodoulides said.
He said the “desired goal” was an announcement that negotiations on the Cyprus issue would resume in a substantive manner.
Christodoulides was also asked about a telephone conversation that had been planned last week between UN Secretary-General António Guterres and his Cyprus envoy, Maria Angela Holguin.
Confirming that the call had taken place, Christodoulides said: “We have received an initial briefing on the outcome of the conversation. I will not disclose the content of the discussion.”
