Erhürman and Christodoulides to Meet Again on Thursday
President Tufan Erhürman and Greek Cypriot leader Nikos Christodoulides will meet again on Thursday, September 17, in their final face-to-face meeting before the UN General Assembly. The negotiators from the two sides will meet today ahead of the leaders’ meeting.
Erhürman is expected to once again raise confidence-building measures and the need to strengthen trust in the negotiating process.
Erhürman and Christodoulides will meet on Thursday, September 17. The meeting will be their final leaders’ contact before the UN General Assembly. The two sides’ negotiators, Mehmet Dana and Menelaos Menelaou, will meet this afternoon to prepare for the leaders’ meeting.
Erhürman Stresses Need to Build Trust
At his last meeting with Christodoulides on September 9, Erhürman focused on new confidence-building measures and stressed that trust between the two communities needed to be strengthened for the negotiating process to move forward.
Erhürman also said steps that could undermine trust should be avoided, noting that no agreement had yet been reached on new confidence-building measures.
Key Contact Before New York
The September 17 meeting is expected to be important in clarifying the positions of the two sides ahead of UN General Assembly meetings in New York later this month.
Erhürman is expected to reiterate his approach to confidence-building measures and how the negotiating process should move forward.
