Üstel: Zero Tolerance for Violence Against Women
Prime Minister Ünal Üstel said the government had not remained silent in the face of violence against women and would continue its determined fight, following a series of recent incidents and the killing of Rukiye Tunçer.
Üstel said recent cases of violence against women, culminating in the femicide of Tunçer yesterday, had caused deep sadness and widespread anger in society.
“I pray for God’s mercy for Rukiye Tunçer, who lost her life, and extend my condolences and patience to her family and loved ones,” Üstel said.
“Violence against women and femicide are unacceptable under any circumstances.
“Ensuring that every woman can live safely and protecting her right to life are among the state’s most fundamental responsibilities.
“We have not remained silent in the face of violence against women, and we will not remain silent.”
Üstel said existing protection and prevention mechanisms were being reviewed following femicides and other incidents of violence against women over the past month.
He said the process was being closely monitored to identify shortcomings, strengthen coordination between institutions and introduce any necessary new measures without delay.
“Our state is waging an all-out fight through the police, judiciary, social services and all relevant institutions,” Üstel said.
He added that he had been closely following the police investigation and ongoing judicial proceedings from the outset, and that all necessary support was being provided to ensure the incident was fully investigated and that all relevant institutions acted with due diligence.
“Learning the necessary lessons from every incident, continuously improving protective and preventive mechanisms for women at risk, and strengthening a system in which women can feel safe are among our primary responsibilities,” Üstel said.
He stressed that combating violence against women was not merely a matter of justice after an incident had occurred.
“Our primary responsibility is to prevent violence before it occurs, protect women at risk and ensure that all state institutions are mobilised effectively,” he said.
“Let it be known that no shortcoming will be ignored and no crime will go unpunished.
“Our position on protecting women’s right to life is clear:
“Zero tolerance for violence against women.
“No justification or mitigating circumstance will be accepted.
“Effective protection and a determined fight will continue to be strengthened.”
