Erhürman and Christodoulides to Meet Tomorrow

Meanwhile, Greek Cypriot negotiator Menelaos Menelaou and Mehmet Dana, Undersecretary to the Turkish Cypriot leader, will meet later today.

The two leaders will meet at 11 a.m. in the UN-controlled buffer zone. The meeting is considered significant for the Cyprus talks as it will take place ahead of the UN General Assembly.

Confidence-building measures and strengthening trust in the negotiation process are expected to be the main issues discussed at the meeting.

Following their meeting last week, Erhürman said no agreement had been reached on new confidence-building measures.

The Turkish Cypriot leader also stressed that a “conducive climate,” as described by UN Secretary-General António Guterres, needed to be created for the negotiation process to move forward.

It was previously announced that UN Secretary-General’s Personal Envoy for Cyprus Maria Angela Holguin would not be on the island ahead of the UN General Assembly due to health reasons.

The leaders’ meeting is therefore expected to take place without Holguin.

Meanwhile, Greek Cypriot negotiator Menelaos Menelaou and Presidential Undersecretary Mehmet Dana will meet later today.

The upcoming meeting between Erhürman and Christodoulides on Thursday, before their departure for New York, has also been covered by the Greek Cypriot press.

Politis, in a report headlined “Negotiators to Meet Again Today,” wrote that Erhürman and Christodoulides would hold their final meeting before travelling to New York on Thursday, while Menelaou and Dana would meet later today.

The newspaper reported that the leaders’ meeting had been scheduled for 11 a.m. and recalled that the UN General Assembly’s “High-Level Week” would begin on Friday, September 18.
