The protesters argued that the antennas could pose a serious threat to the area’s already fragile ecosystem and have adverse effects on residents’ health. They also criticized the government for failing to adequately address the safety and concerns of local residents.

Haravgi reported that residents claimed the new antennas could create significant risks in the environmentally sensitive area and negatively affect public health.

The newspaper also said the government had come under criticism for allegedly failing to take sufficient interest in the protection and safety of Akrotiri residents.

Haravgi reported that Pandelis Yeorgiou, mayor of Kourio, said the initial plan involved installing 20 new antennas and removing 18 existing ones. He later said plans had emerged for 68 new antennas and two new buildings.

The Ecologists-Citizens’ Cooperation also said that protecting public health and the environment required transparency and that the concerns of local residents should be taken into account.
