Speaking to journalists six days before world leaders gather in New York for the United Nations General Assembly, Guterres was asked whether, based on his latest discussions with his Personal Envoy for Cyprus, Maria Angela Holguin, the conditions he had outlined in July for a possible 3+1 or 5+1 meeting had been met or were being met.

Guterres said no such meeting would take place during the UN General Assembly, noting that “there is still a lot of work to be done.”

“However, we are determined to move things forward and we are determined to do everything possible to make this happen when the conditions for the meeting to be successful are in place,” he said.

Emphasizing the need not to repeat past mistakes, Guterres said: “We cannot repeat the mistakes of the past.”
