Khassim Diagne: Peace Is Possible, Let’s Invest in It Together
UN Secretary-General’s Special Representative for Cyprus and Head of the UN Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP) Khassim Diagne said peace means more than simply the absence of conflict, stressing the importance of dialogue, trust and cooperation in a message marking the International Day of Peace on September 21.
“Peace is a shared commitment to dialogue, mutual respect, cooperation and the belief that differences can be resolved peacefully,” Diagne said.
Diagne said this year’s global theme, “Invest in Peace,” called for recognition that peace requires sustained effort, resources and a shared will.
Describing the search for peace in Cyprus as a shared responsibility, Diagne noted that the United Nations Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP) had stood alongside the people of the island for more than 60 years.
He said UNFICYP had helped maintain stability, facilitate dialogue and support conditions conducive to a comprehensive settlement. The International Day of Peace, he added, provided an opportunity to reflect on progress made, acknowledge ongoing challenges and renew the commitment to a peaceful future for all Cypriots.
“INVESTING IN PEACE MEANS INVESTING IN DIALOGUE AND TRUST”
“Investing in peace means investing in dialogue, trust and understanding. Every act of cooperation and every effort to overcome divisions contributes to a culture of peace,” Diagne said.
He said the United Nations welcomed the continued engagement of the Cypriot leaders, as well as civil society, young people, women and communities across the island in efforts to advance peace and reconciliation.
Diagne called on all sections of society to contribute to peace efforts.
“LOOK BEYOND THE DIVISIONS OF THE PAST”
On the International Day of Peace, Diagne encouraged everyone living in Cyprus to “look beyond the divisions of the past and focus on the possibilities of the future.”
He stressed that the UN would continue to support a peaceful, stable and prosperous Cyprus.
Diagne said UNFICYP would continue to carry out its mandate in the service of the people of the island and peace.
“Let us use this day to reaffirm our shared hope for a Cyprus where dialogue prevails over division, cooperation over conflict, and peace becomes a lasting reality for generations to come,” he said.
Diagne concluded his message by saying: “Peace is possible. Let’s invest in it together.”
