Neofitu Announces Presidential Bid After No Breakthrough in New York

Neofitu’s long-awaited announcement yesterday that he would run in the 2028 presidential election reportedly caused a major stir and triggered debate within DISY.

Under the headline “Averof Announces, DISY Responds,” Alithia reported that Neofitu made no reference to DISY in his written statement announcing his candidacy, leaving unanswered whether he intends to pursue his candidacy through the party’s procedures or contest the election as an independent.

The report also noted that Antonis Stylianou, one of the party’s candidates for the 2026 parliamentary elections, issued a statement expressing support for Neofitu’s candidacy.

DISY Responds

According to the newspaper, DISY said following Neofitu’s announcement that the party operates on the basis of its statutes and collective decisions.

The party said anyone interested in running for president naturally has the right to do so, but stressed that the only way to seek the party’s nomination is through its established institutional and legal procedures.

The statement also noted that Neofitu was well aware of the importance of following procedures and making collective decisions.

“This is not about individuals, but about institutions, respect for tens of thousands of members and party unity,” the statement said.

Meanwhile, Phileleftheros reported in a front-page story that Neofitu’s announcement had created a new set of circumstances.

Describing the former party leader’s announcement as finally “dropping the bombshell,” the newspaper said Neofitu’s decision had put pressure on DISY, which now faces his candidacy before even launching its own internal procedure for the presidential election.

The report added that the DISY leadership is scheduled to meet today.
