Nationwide Traffic and Public Order Checks: 14 Arrested, 1,362 Drivers Reported

During the traffic inspections conducted by the Police General Directorate, speeding was the most common violation, followed by driving without a road tax licence, a valid vehicle inspection or insurance, failing to wear a seat belt, and driving under the influence of alcohol.

Nicosia

In Nicosia, 2,748 drivers were checked and legal proceedings were initiated against 458.

Of those reported, 115 were cited for speeding, seven for driving under the influence of alcohol, six for driving without insurance, one for driving without a licence and insurance, one for talking on a mobile phone while driving, and one for using an electric scooter.

Twelve vehicles were taken off the road and one driver was arrested.

Famagusta

In Famagusta, 978 drivers were checked and 325 were reported.

A total of 175 drivers were reported for speeding, 47 for driving without a road tax licence, 24 for driving without a valid inspection, eight for driving without insurance, two for driving under the influence of alcohol and two for driving without a licence.

Three drivers were cited for failing to obey traffic signs and signals, while another three were reported for violating vehicle lighting regulations.

Three vehicles were taken off the road.

Kyrenia

In Kyrenia, 1,256 drivers were checked and legal proceedings were initiated against 268.

Of those reported, 103 were cited for speeding, 28 for driving without insurance, 19 for failing to wear a seat belt, 12 for driving under the influence of alcohol, 11 for violating traffic light rules and five for driving without a valid vehicle inspection.

A total of 44 vehicles were taken off the road.

Güzelyurt

In Güzelyurt, 650 drivers were checked and 108 were reported.

Twenty-one drivers were cited for speeding, 19 for failing to wear a seat belt, 15 for driving without a road tax licence, 12 for driving without a valid inspection, six for operating without a business permit and one for driving under the influence of alcohol.

One driver was also reported for driving without a licence. Two vehicles were taken off the road.

İskele

In İskele, 674 drivers were checked and 203 were reported.

Seventy-seven were cited for speeding, 40 for driving without a road tax licence, 27 for driving without a valid inspection, nine for driving without insurance and seven for failing to wear a seat belt.

Two drivers were reported for dangerous driving, while one was cited for driving without a licence, one for operating without a business permit and one for failing to obey traffic signs.

One vehicle was taken off the road.

14 Arrested in Public Order Checks

Meanwhile, extensive public order checks conducted across the country from last night until the early hours of the morning resulted in the arrest of 14 people found to be residing in the country without valid permits.

According to the Police Press Officer, simultaneous inspections were carried out in the areas of responsibility of the Nicosia, Famagusta, Kyrenia, Güzelyurt and İskele police departments, with the participation of the Narcotics and Smuggling Prevention Directorate and the Special Operations Directorate.

Entertainment venues, establishments selling alcoholic beverages, nightclubs, casinos, coffeehouses, guesthouses, workers’ accommodation, betting offices and areas frequented by the public were inspected.

Of the 14 people arrested for residing in the country without valid permits, eight were detained in Nicosia, three in Famagusta and three in Güzelyurt.

107 People Reported for Violating Casino Bans

As part of the checks, legal proceedings were also initiated against 107 people found to have entered casinos despite being banned from doing so.

A total of 107 people were fined: 26 in Nicosia, 24 in Famagusta, 41 in Kyrenia and 16 in İskele.
