Ertuğruloğlu Meets UN Officials in New York
TRNC Foreign Minister Tahsin Ertuğruloğlu held separate meetings with UN Under-Secretary-General for Political and Peacebuilding Affairs Rosemary DiCarlo and UN Under-Secretary-General for Peace Operations Jean-Pierre Lacroix at UN Headquarters in New York as part of the 81st session of the UN General Assembly.
During his meeting with DiCarlo, Ertuğruloğlu said any agreement that could be reached on Cyprus could only be based on the sovereign equality and equal international status of the two states.
Ertuğruloğlu also once again provided DiCarlo with a detailed account of the Cyprus policy jointly pursued by the TRNC and Turkey.
During his meeting with Lacroix, issues concerning the activities of the UN Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP) in the TRNC were discussed.
Ertuğruloğlu referred to what he described as violations by the Greek Cypriot side in the buffer zone and said he expected UNFICYP to intervene more effectively to prevent such incidents in the future.
Ertuğruloğlu, who was in New York for the 81st UN General Assembly, travelled to Washington after completing his meetings.
In Washington, the foreign minister is expected to meet with a number of officials, speak at think tanks and meet with members of the press.
