AKEL Opposes Renaming Turkish Street Names in Mutallo
AKEL’s municipal group in Paphos has opposed efforts to change Turkish street names in Mutallo, a former Turkish Cypriot neighbourhood, particularly the name of Kemal Atatürk Avenue.
According to Haravgi, AKEL said in a statement that it was opposed to the initiative to rename Kemal Atatürk Avenue in particular.
The statement said the Greek Cypriot Foreign Ministry had not yet expressed an official position on the issue and was expected to clarify its stance on the matter, which has been under discussion for some time.
AKEL noted that Mutallo was formerly a Turkish Cypriot neighbourhood of Paphos, making the area a particularly sensitive issue.
According to the newspaper, AKEL also said that changing Turkish street and place names would contradict criticism directed at the Turkish Cypriot side over similar changes to street and place names.
