Ataser: Mixed Voting Abolition to Go to Constitutional Court

Lapta-Alsancak-Çamlıbel (LAÇ) Mayor Fırat Ataser has announced that they will take the abolition of the mixed voting system to the Constitutional Court after the legislation was approved by a majority vote in the TRNC Parliament.

Speaking after the TRNC Parliament approved the legislation, Ataser said they would file an application with the Constitutional Court tomorrow seeking to prevent the abolition of mixed voting.

“Parliament approved the abolition of mixed voting by a majority vote. Tomorrow, we will apply to the Constitutional Court to prevent the abolition of mixed voting. We will announce the time,” Ataser said.

WHAT HAPPENED?

The General Assembly of the TRNC Parliament reconsidered the Election and Referendum (Amendment No. 2) Bill after it was returned by the President for further review.

The bill was discussed during the fourth Extraordinary Session of the General Assembly, which began at around 12:45 p.m. under the chairmanship of Parliament Speaker Ziya Öztürkler.

Following the debate, the bill was approved by a majority vote.

Under the legislation, the mixed voting system used in elections was abolished.
