Law Abolishing Mixed Voting Published in Official Gazette
President Tufan Erhürman has approved the Election and Referendum (Amendment No. 2) Law, which was sent back to the TRNC Parliament for reconsideration and subsequently approved for a second time. The law, which abolishes the mixed voting system, was published in the Official Gazette and entered into force on October 1.
The Election and Referendum (Amendment No. 2) Law, previously approved by a majority vote in the General Assembly of the TRNC Parliament, had been returned to Parliament by President Tufan Erhürman for reconsideration.
The bill was reviewed again by the Committee on Legal, Political Affairs, Foreign Relations and Defence and referred back to the General Assembly without any amendments. It was approved by a majority vote during an extraordinary session on September 29. Following the President’s approval, the law was published in the Official Gazette.
UBP MP Oğuzhan Hasipoğlu, who submitted the bill on May 9, 2023, had previously said that 41% of the 14,000 mixed votes cast in the 2022 elections had been declared invalid. He argued that the mixed voting system created a complicated procedure for voters.
Under the new legislation, voters will no longer be able to use the mixed voting system in parliamentary and municipal council elections.
