Erhürman: EU Citizenship for Mixed-Marriage Children Is a Human Rights Issue

President Tufan Erhürman has commented on the right to EU citizenship of children born to mixed-marriage couples, saying the issue is fundamentally not a confidence-building measure (CBM), but rather a “human rights and non-discrimination issue.”

Erhürman was responding to a statement by the Greek Cypriot leadership concerning the EU citizenship rights of children born to mixed-marriage couples.

Noting that the Greek Cypriot leadership had once again stated that the issue should not be considered a confidence-building measure, Erhürman said they essentially viewed the matter within the same framework.

“As we have always said, we also believe that this is not essentially a confidence-building measure issue. It is a human rights and non-discrimination issue,” Erhürman said.

However, Erhürman pointed out that the issue is among the seven confidence-building measures raised by the UN Secretary-General in Nicosia, adding:

“Of course, there is no doubt that when one side eliminates an ongoing violation of human rights and the principle of non-discrimination concerning children on the other side, this also has a confidence-building aspect.”
