During the hearing, Specialist Dr. Yağmur Darben Azarsız provided information about the suspect’s mental health. Azarsız said E.T. had been diagnosed with schizophrenia and explained the different phases of the illness.

She said schizophrenia has periods of remission and exacerbation, adding that the suspect is currently in an acute exacerbation phase. Describing schizophrenia as a mental health disorder and a chronic condition that lasts throughout a person’s life, Azarsız said the suspect could pose a danger to the community and therefore required treatment.

Senior Judge Cenkay İnan ordered E.T. to be kept under supervision at Barış Mental and Neurological Diseases Hospital for life under Articles 2, 6, 7 and 20 of the Mental Patients Law, Chapter 252.
