Health Minister Dr Hakan Dinçyürek said they continued to introduce innovations in healthcare, announcing that artificial intelligence had begun to be used in medical diagnosis.

“We are continuing to introduce innovations in healthcare in our country. We are very pleased to say that artificial intelligence has now entered the diagnostic process in healthcare. Months ago, we set out our vision of using artificial intelligence in healthcare as one of our goals. Today, we are putting that vision into practice,” Dinçyürek said.

He explained that all mammograms are made available to the radiologist within a short period of one to two minutes, after the images have been analysed by artificial intelligence.

“Because the images go through an AI check, with potentially suspicious areas marked before they reach the radiologist, the reporting time is reduced and the margin of error is significantly lowered,” Dinçyürek said.

Emphasising that artificial intelligence would not replace doctors, Dinçyürek said, “AI does not produce a report or make a diagnosis. It assists the doctor who will make the diagnosis.”

Dinçyürek said the AI application was currently being used for mammography in the healthcare system and noted that “more than 100 reports have been completed.”

He added that new AI applications would be introduced very soon.

“Very soon, within days or weeks, AI applications will also be put into use for chest X-rays, stroke and brain haemorrhage, including CT, CT angiography and brain MRI, as well as prostate MRI. These applications will assist the doctors responsible for preparing the reports,” he said.
