According to a report by Cyprus Mail, Demetriou’s decision leaves the contest between Averof Neophytou and Giorgos Pamboridis.

The decision came after a crucial meeting between Demetriou, Neophytou and Pamboridis at the party’s headquarters in Nicosia, aimed at preserving party unity and reaching a consensus on its presidential candidate.

Step Back to Reach Consensus

Earlier in the day, media reports indicated that Demetriou was prepared to step aside on the condition that Neophytou joined the party’s internal selection process rather than running as an independent candidate.

The reported conditions also included a commitment to support whichever candidate was chosen by party members, even if that candidate was not Neophytou.

The negotiations began after former Health Minister Giorgos Pamboridis called for the three figures to meet in an effort to resolve the internal dispute. The talks culminated in Demetriou’s decision to withdraw from the race.
