According to Haravgi, Fitto told a European Parliament session on Thursday that tensions in the Eastern Mediterranean could not be reduced sustainably without a settlement of the Cyprus problem.

He said the Republic of Cyprus and Greece had the EU’s full support and stressed that Turkey must respect the sovereignty and territorial integrity of EU member states in accordance with international law.

Fitto said the EU remained committed to a settlement of the Cyprus problem based on United Nations Security Council resolutions. He added that reducing tensions was a prerequisite for progress in EU-Turkey relations and for regional stability.

Reaffirming the EU’s commitment to protecting the interests of Greece and the Republic of Cyprus, Fitto called for dialogue, restraint and respect for international law.
