According to the Greek Cypriot newspaper Fileleftheros, Kombos briefed his counterparts on the latest developments concerning the Memorandum of Understanding on the Supply of Natural Gas to the TRNC, signed between Turkey and the TRNC, during yesterday’s EU Foreign Affairs Council meeting.
Kombos said the memorandum concerned the construction of a natural gas pipeline system and alleged that it constituted a clear violation of the Greek Cypriot administration’s sovereign rights and international law.
He also claimed that the agreement was part of Turkey’s broader plans. Kombos said 659 violations involving the airspace and exclusive economic zone claimed by the Greek Cypriot administration had occurred in July and August alone, adding that the incidents had been reported to the United Nations.
Arguing that such an approach was entirely incompatible with Turkey’s obligations as an EU candidate country, Kombos criticised what he described as Turkey’s broader stance and conduct.
During the meeting, Kombos also emphasised the importance of EU enlargement, describing it as a strategic investment.
