Greek Minister of State Akis Skertsos, Health Minister Adonis Georgiadis and Digital Governance Minister Dimitris Papastergiou held a joint press conference to outline a draft bill concerning minors’ access to social media platforms.
Skertsos stressed that measures taken by social media companies to protect children were no longer sufficient, announcing that access to social media platforms would be restricted for children under the age of 15.
Health Minister Georgiadis said more than half of children aged 10 to 12 had social media accounts, while one in four children with an account spent excessive amounts of time on social media.
Digital Governance Minister Papastergiou said the legal framework would be developed in line with European Union legislation and that the measure would take effect on January 1, 2027.
Accounts opened by children under the age of 15 before the measure comes into force will also be blocked.
