Akansoy: Public Has Made Its Decision, CTP Set for Success on December 6

Republican Turkish Party (CTP) MP Asım Akansoy appeared on Sabah Postası, a programme hosted by Gökhan Altıner on Kıbrıs Postası TV, to discuss the parliamentary and local elections scheduled for December 6, the CTP’s electoral expectations, relations with Turkey and the policies the party plans to implement if it comes to power.

“THE PUBLIC HAS MADE ITS DECISION AND IS POINTING TO THE CTP”

Based on his observations on the ground, Akansoy said he believed the public had already made up its mind, adding that voters had a clear perception of the political situation and were acting accordingly.

He said he did not expect the picture regarding the election results to change significantly over the next six weeks.

“What I see is that the public is pointing to the CTP. I expect the December 6 elections to produce a result in which the CTP achieves considerable success,” he said.

“We have said what we had to say, and the UBP has done what it has done,” Akansoy added.

Noting that holding the two elections during the same period was a new experience, Akansoy said he believed this would work to the CTP’s advantage. He said the party was confident of its prospects in the local elections, adding that its experience and achievements in local government would also have a positive impact on the parliamentary elections.

“I believe our success in local government will also be reflected in the general election,” Akansoy said. He predicted a high voter turnout and noted that the electoral threshold was 5 per cent.

“THE UBP CANNOT READ SOCIETY”

Akansoy said the National Unity Party (UBP) was failing to assess public expectations accurately, adding that the government was announcing promise after promise without engaging in a meaningful discussion about what society actually wanted.

He said the CTP had a responsibility to present a realistic and inclusive approach to governance, also highlighting the quality of its parliamentary candidates.

Describing the party’s MPs and candidates as highly valuable, Akansoy said politics should not be about personal rankings alone, but about who would govern the country.

“Whether I come first or last is not important. What matters is that the CTP has a strong pool of parliamentary candidates under the leadership of İncirli,” he said, stressing that the party had the personnel needed to govern the country.

“THERE IS NO DIVISION WITHIN THE CTP”

Akansoy said the CTP had maintained its internal unity and that there had been no lingering resentment following the party congress held approximately eight months ago.

He said everyone had expressed their views and worked hard during the congress process, adding that party members had decided to move forward together.

“This is a major achievement for the CTP. Ensuring integration within the party and continuing the struggle are significant gains. There is no division,” Akansoy said.

“OUR RELATIONS WITH TURKEY ARE NOT COLD”

Akansoy also responded to comments by Re-Birth Party (YDP) leader Erhan Arıklı suggesting that Turkey was cool towards the CTP.

He said the Turkish state would not adopt a cold approach towards the administration of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC).

Akansoy noted that some political parties in Turkey might take a questioning stance towards the party preparing to take over the administration in the TRNC, adding that this would not be unique to the CTP.

He said the Turkish state was not ignoring the TRNC or the difficulties facing the country, stressing that relations with Turkey would remain important “regardless of who comes to power”.

Akansoy said the CTP would introduce a new approach to governance if it came to power, adding that the change would be recognised by both bureaucrats and society.
