In a written statement, the party argued that the memorandum violated international law, should be condemned and had no legal validity.

AKEL claimed that the Turkey-Libya memorandum clearly violated international law, particularly the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea. It also argued that the agreement infringed on the rights of other states, including Greece, concerning the maritime zones of islands.

“All Relevant States Must Participate and Reach Agreement”

AKEL said the delimitation of maritime zones must be based on international law, stressing that such processes should involve the participation and agreement of all relevant states affected by the delimitation.

The party said it would maintain its opposition to the Turkey-Libya memorandum despite the Libyan Parliament’s approval.
