Kombos: Holguin Cannot Treat the Two Sides as Equals
Greek Cypriot Foreign Minister Constantinos Kombos has said that UN Secretary-General’s Personal Envoy for Cyprus Maria Angela Holguin cannot treat the two sides as equals, commenting on her recent interview with the Greek Cypriot press.
The newspaper Phileleftheros reported on Kombos’s remarks in an interview with the Cyprus Broadcasting Corporation (RIK).
Referring to Holguin’s statements, Kombos said it was not possible to place the two sides on an equal footing.
He said diplomatic practice required maintaining a degree of even-handedness, but stressed that this did not mean such an approach reflected the realities on the ground.
According to Alithia, Kombos said it was impossible to equate the side that had contributed to Holguin’s appointment, mobilised the European Union and continually put forward proposals with the other side.
Kombos said they were ready to resume talks immediately, provided that they took place within the framework established by the UN Security Council and under one fundamental condition.
He reiterated that diplomatic practice called for maintaining an equal distance from both sides, while stressing that this did not necessarily reflect the situation on the ground.
Kombos added that the Greek Cypriot side could collectively decide how to interpret Holguin’s views and what positions to put forward in response.
