U15 Teams of Turkey’s Big Four to Meet at TRNC Friendship Cup
The TRNC Friendship Cup, scheduled to take place at Nicosia Atatürk Stadium on 7-8 November under the auspices of the Prime Ministry and with the support of the Cyprus Turkish Football Association, will bring the youth teams of Turkey’s four major football clubs together on the same pitch with Turkish Cypriot youngsters. The event carries historical significance as it aims to reunite the four clubs in the TRNC for the first time since the 1975 Cyprus Peace Cup.
The Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus is preparing for a historic gathering in its sporting history.
The TRNC Friendship Cup U15 Football Tournament, scheduled to be held at Nicosia Atatürk Stadium on 7-8 November under the auspices of the Prime Ministry and with the support of the Cyprus Turkish Football Association, will bring the youth teams of Turkey’s four major clubs – Beşiktaş, Fenerbahçe, Galatasaray and Trabzonspor – together on the same pitch with Turkish Cypriot youngsters.
The event, which is intended to go ahead despite the obstacles faced by Turkish Cypriot youth in international sports, will be a tangible demonstration of the importance the government led by Prime Minister Ünal Üstel attaches to young people and sports.
BARCELONA TRAINING CAMP BLOCKED, NEW STEP TAKEN FOR TURKISH CYPRIOT YOUTH
As will be recalled, a football training camp planned by Barcelona, Spain’s world-famous football club, in the TRNC was cancelled following initiatives by the Greek Cypriot Administration.
The Cyprus Football Association, in consultation with UEFA, had approached the Spanish Football Federation in an effort to prevent the camp from taking place.
Following the cancellation, the far-right Greek Cypriot party ELAM welcomed the development, saying in a statement: “We have achieved our goal.”
The incident once again brought into focus the political obstacles preventing Turkish Cypriot youth from connecting with the rest of the world through sport.
Following this obstruction, Prime Minister Ünal Üstel took action to help overcome the restrictions faced by Turkish Cypriot youngsters in international sports.
Following contacts by Prime Minister Üstel with Turkish Minister of Youth and Sports Osman Aşkın Bak and Turkish Football Federation President İbrahim Hacıosmanoğlu, an important step was taken towards bringing the U15 teams of Turkey’s four major clubs together for the TRNC Friendship Cup.
The tournament, planned to be held under the auspices of the Prime Ministry and with the support of the Cyprus Turkish Football Association, with the strong backing of the Republic of Turkey, will contribute to the sporting development of Turkish Cypriot youth while also serving as a tangible demonstration of the unbreakable bonds of brotherhood between Turkey and the TRNC.
HISTORIC GATHERING SINCE 1975
The planned reunion of Turkey’s four major clubs in a football tournament in the TRNC, following the Cyprus Peace Cup held in 1975, carries particular significance for the history of Turkish Cypriot sport.
Planned half a century after that event, the tournament will be more than just a football competition; it will also be a meaningful demonstration of the strong bonds of brotherhood between Turkey and the TRNC being passed on to new generations.
A MAJOR OPPORTUNITY FOR TURKISH CYPRIOT YOUTH
Turkish Cypriot youngsters, who have faced embargoes and restrictions in international sports for years, will have the opportunity to share the same pitch with the youth teams of Turkey’s established football clubs.
The tournament, which is planned to feature the U15 teams of Beşiktaş, Fenerbahçe, Galatasaray and Trabzonspor, will not only contribute to the sporting development of young footballers but also create opportunities to build new friendships and share experiences.
The TRNC Friendship Cup, to be held under the auspices of the Prime Ministry and with the support of the Cyprus Turkish Football Association, will form an important part of the government’s goal of supporting investment in young people and sports through an event of international significance.
COMPETITION ON THE PITCH, BROTHERHOOD IN HEARTS
The TRNC Friendship Cup aims not only to bring young athletes together to compete on the football pitch but also to unite them around the values of sportsmanship, mutual respect, friendship and solidarity.
The event, which will bring Turkey’s four major clubs together with Turkish Cypriot youth, is intended to revive a historic gathering after half a century and further strengthen the bonds of brotherhood between Turkey and the TRNC on the football pitch.
