Gören’s Candidacy Annulled: CTP to Appeal Decision to YSK
The Republican Turkish Party (CTP) has announced that it will refer the District Election Board’s decision to annul the candidacy of its Erenköy-Karpaz Mayor candidate, Tevfik Gören, to the Supreme Election Board (YSK).
Following the District Election Board’s acceptance of an objection to Gören’s candidacy, the Republican Turkish Party (CTP) said it would submit the decision for review by the Supreme Election Board (YSK).
CTP stated that the objection had been accepted on the grounds that Gören did not meet the legal requirement of having maintained permanent residence in the area for the previous three years. The party said it had a different legal interpretation of the permanent residency requirement on which the decision was based.
In its statement, the party stressed that it fully respected the rule of law, the independent judiciary and the decisions of the competent election boards, adding that it would exercise its legal right to appeal and refer the matter to the YSK for review.
Noting that the right to vote and stand for election is one of the fundamental rights underpinning the democratic order, the statement said the legal conditions governing the exercise of this right should be assessed in accordance with the principles of legal certainty and proportionality.
CTP said it would continue to pursue the legal process while maintaining its efforts to assume responsibility in both local government and the administration of the country.
