Christodoulides Expresses Dissatisfaction Over Holguín’s Meeting With Turkish Ambassador
Greek Cypriot leader Nikos Christodoulides expressed “strong displeasure” over the meeting held yesterday between María Angela Holguín, the United Nations (UN) Secretary-General’s Personal Representative on Cyprus, and Turkish Ambassador to Nicosia Ali Murat Başçeri.
Speaking to the press after meeting Holguín at the Presidential Palace, Government Spokesperson Konstantinos Letymbiotis argued that her meeting with Başçeri was contrary to UN Security Council Resolution 550.
Letymbiotis described the meeting as “unacceptable” and “an unfortunate moment”.
Stating that UN officials and representatives should act in accordance with Security Council resolutions, Letymbiotis said the explanation given for the meeting was that Turkey’s Deputy Foreign Minister Mehmet Kemal Bozay had arranged it to convey a message.
Letymbiotis also noted that Holguín’s contacts would continue and that efforts would proceed towards holding a joint meeting between the parties on November 9.
