Foreign Ministry Rejects ‘Unjustified Accusations’ in EU’s Turkey Report

The TRNC Foreign Ministry has reacted to the European Commission’s 2026 Türkiye Report, rejecting its assessments concerning the TRNC and the Turkish Cypriot people. The ministry stressed that it would not abandon its vision of a two-state solution and would continue, together with Turkey, to pursue policies based on sovereign equality and equal international status.

In a statement on the European Commission’s 2026 Türkiye Report, the Foreign Ministry said: “We categorically reject the biased, detached-from-reality and unjustified accusations in the report that directly target the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus and the legitimate rights of the Turkish Cypriot people. As the TRNC, we fully support the assessments set out in the statement issued by the Republic of Türkiye’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs regarding the report.”

The ministry said the report clearly demonstrated that the European Union continued to pursue an approach that disregarded the will of the Turkish Cypriot people and the realities on the island.

“The two-state solution vision criticised in the Commission’s report is the natural consequence of the collapse of half a century of exhausted federal settlement efforts on the island, due to the Greek Cypriot side’s intransigence and its mentality of rejecting power-sharing,” the statement said.

Emphasising that a fair, lasting and sustainable peace on the island could only be achieved by recognising the sovereign equality and equal international status of the two states existing on the island, the ministry said the TRNC would continue to defend this vision in full agreement with its motherland, the Republic of Türkiye.

The statement added that the Turkish Cypriot side, together with Turkey, would never compromise on its determination to protect its rights and interests in the Eastern Mediterranean.
